Dolomite refractory material consisting of grains of doloma, sepd. by a gaugue of silicate with oxide impurities in solid soln. The refractory is prepd. by adding finely divided silica to naturl or synthetic solomite, mixing so that the dolomite grains are coted with SiO2, compressing the mixt. and firing at 1000 degrees C. Since the grains of doloma are sepd. by a continuous silicate phase in the fired prod. resistance to friction is improved. While cracks may proagate withint individual grains, propagetion stops at the silicate layer. The gaugue layer consists primarily of 2. CaO.SiO2 so that the refractory presents a high level of vol. stability during firing. This permits a much better control of the granularity and allows prodn. of a low porosity. Virtually all fice lime is eliminated from grain surfaces to that the resistance to hydration is vastly improved. The mechanical strength of new and fired refractory shapes is also increased.
