Melt spinning polymeric filaments, e.g. of polyester - in which the solidified filaments are treated with a fluid at above their glass transition temps., thus eliminating a separate drawing stage
Melt spinning polymeric filaments, e.g. of polyester - in which the solidified filaments are treated with a fluid at above their glass transition temps., thus eliminating a separate drawing stage
Prodn. of polymeric filaments such as polyesters (esp. polyethylene terephthalate) and of polyamides (esp. polyhexamethylene adipamide). Process comprises (a) melt extruding the polymer to form filaments; (b) passing the molten filaments through a solidification zone; and (c) passing the solidified filaments through a tensioning, but non-drawing zone. The filmanets are then passed through a zone in which they are fluid-heated to above their Tg's temps. and finally wound at 1000m/min. Sequence allows melt-spun filaments to have properties similar to those of drawn filaments without separate drawing and spinning operations.
