Counter flow heat exchanger for effecting heat transfer between two longitudinally flowing gas streams at different temp. and press. comprises a rectangular housing contg. elongated fluid channel units each formed from a pair of spaced corrugated plates. The plates are corrugated transversely to the housing in an oscillatory wave pattern having symmetrical peaks and valleys, the peaks of one plate abutting the peaks of the other to define longitudinal flow passages. The fluid channel units are prepd. by transverse separator rods, the wave patterns of the plates in each unit being 180 degrees out of phase to create longitudinal counter flow channels for the two gas streams. Used to preheat combustion air before its introduction into a combustion chamber, by means of hot exhaust gases from the combustion chamber. The heat exchanger can be used for both counter-flow and cross-flow operations.
