摘要
The composite material is produced by obtaining a uniform dispersion of ceramic fibres in metal powder by dry mixing, followed by cold pressing, heating the compact to produced further densification, and finally hot pressing, to obtain still further densification. Pref. the fibres have a dia. of 10 u and the fibre-powder mixture is extruded =3 times to provide a uniform dispersion. The first pressing may be at 500-4000 psi, followed by heating to render the metal semi-molten. In a particular embodiment fibres are graphite or silicon carbide and form 10-30% by vol. of a mixt. with aluminium. The fibres may be coated with magnesium before mixing with the matrix metal. The use of micron- or submicro- sized fibres improves the strength of the resultant product.
