Hypocholesterolaemic 2,8-di:benzyl-cyclooctanone mfr. - by contacting 2-benzyl-cyclooctanone silyl-enol-ether with tri:methyl-benzyl-ammonium fluoride and prod. with benzyl halide
Prodn. of 2,8-dibenzyl-cyclooctanone comprises contacting silyl-enol-ether of 2-benzyl-cyclooctanone with trimehtyl-benzyl-ammonium-fluoride and reacting the resulting converted cpd. with a benzyl halide of formula Ar.CH2X to form trans-2.8-dibenzyl-cyclooctanone of formula (I) (where X is Cl or Br and Ar is phenyl). The trimethyl-benzyl-ammonium-fluoride is of formula Ar.CH2X+-(CH3)3-F-. Reaction is carried out in the presence of a molecular sieve. 2,8-Dibenzyl-cyclooctanone is useful as a hypocholesterolaemic agent.
