Black oil solvent deasphalting column - with shroud and baffles above heat:exchange bundles and trays forming mixing and settling zones

Apparatus for solvent deasphalting black oils comprises a vertical cylindrical column with horizontal liq.-liq. contacting trays between a lower end solvent inlet and a higher charge stock inlet, and between the stock inlet and two bundles of U-shaped heat-exchange tubes stabbed through the column wall at opposite sides. There are top and bottom liquid outlets and an imperforate horizontal shroud is located above the bundles to provide two opposing chordal openings between shroud straight edges and column wall, above and below which are respective pairs of chordal baffle plates. The arrangement allows an asphaltene extract to be mixed by the shroud and baffles and then retained in a quiescent settling zone before discharge.
