The circuit breaker has a main switching system and an auxiliary switching system, the latter being series connected to a current limiting resistor and opening after the main switching system. The auxiliary system (5) comprises an energy store (25) with a latching device (22, 23, 27) the energy store being charged by the main system (1) drive (14). The latching device is forcibly engaged in the charged position of the energy store, while being releasable during switching-off in dependence on the position of the moving contact (2) of the main system. Preferably the two switching systems have a common drive shaft connected to the auxiliary system by a freewheeling coupling (17 20-22).
