In a machine for applying a gusseted tubular web 17 to a palleted load 2 and having means 33 projecting into the gusset folds of each side of the web to open the gusset and to present the web to grippers 17 on the web opening and feeding chains 10, the means each comprise a fixed gusset opening member 38 and a further member 39 movable between a position in which it co-operates with the chains 10 and a retracted inactive position in which it lies out of the operational path of the cutting and welding elements 28.
