A vertical pillar (2) is arranged in a support (1) for lateral sliding movement by an endless chain drive mechanism. A cantilevered arm (3) extends from and slides up and down the pillar. A carriage (4) slides along the arm and has a gripper head (5) rotatably mounted on it. Movements of the head, arm and pillar are programmed so that packets (8) arriving along a conveyor (9) are automatically engaged by the head (5) and transferred to a pallet (10) on which packets are built up in layers. The gripper head may be replaced by forks. The appts. may be programmed to remove packets from a loaded pallet.
