EP--98753 A Earthworms or earthworm cocoons are introduced into sepd. animal waste solids or vegetable prepn. waste solids and allowed to mature and breed, consuming the waste. The method provides a use for the wastes. Earthworms are rich in protein and other nutrients, and can be added to animal feed. The residue they leave has a peat-like texture and very little odour, and is useful as a plant food and soil conditioner. - The earthworms are pref. one or more of the species Eudrilus eugeniae, Eisenia foetida, Perionyx excavatus or Dendrobaena veneta. The wastes pref. have a moisture content close to that of earthworms; pref. are sepd. cattle or pig waste solids of water content 78-82% or potato prepn. waste solids of water content 75-79%. The worms are pref. grown at 18-25 deg.C. The stocking rate i.e. ratio of wt. of worms to wt. of waste, is pref. 1:50 to 1:30. C and break down the waste into a product of peat-like appearance. - (11pp) GBAB- GB2126574 B A process of decomposing a waste consisting of, or including a major proportion of, separated animal waste solids or of vegetable peelings waste solids, the separated animal waste solids being obtained by separation of a solids fraction from animal waste slurry, the waste to be decomposed having a pH of between 5 and 9, any ammonia content less than 0.5 mg/g and a water content from 65 to 90% by weight which process comprises introducing earthworms or earthworm cocoons into the waste and allowing the worms to mature and breed therein at a temperature of from 15 to 30 deg.
