Chimneys of factories and electricity power plants are demolished piece by piece after a framework which comprises a plurality of radial arms and a jack mounted on each arm and adjustable along said arm with a support foot under the arm in contact with the edge of the chimney has been erected or placed on the edge of the chimney. The framework also comprises a substantially annular platform suspended from the hoisting jack, from which the operators are able to remove the fabric of the chimney. The fabric is removed from under the feet of alternate jacks and then the feet are lowered in order to enter into support contact with the surfaces recently presented under them. This is repeated with the intermediate jacks and so on, in succession. A cover structure is preferably supported by the hoisting-jack arms.
