Liquefaction of low-grade coal esp. lignite

Low grade coals, esp. lignite, are converted into oils and prods. soluble in organic solvents by treatment with an aromatic substrate and an acid catalyst under 1-5 atmos. pressure at reflux temp. for 4-6 hrs. The prod. is isolated by extraction, and the extract fractionated into two parts of high and low mol. wts.
