A B S T R A C TA process for the production of aluminiummetal which comprises maintaining a body of molten slagin an essentially vertical column by passage ofelectric current through said slag between upper andlower electrodes in contact with such slag, maintaininglayer of feed carbon and alumina in particulateform floating on said body of slag and passing evolvedgases upwardly through the layer.The slag at the upper end of the column maybe in communication with a laterally displaced settlementchamber in which quiescent conditions are maintained toallow upward settlement of Al droplets to form a productlayer.The electrodes are graphite and are heavilycooled to protect them from attack by the slag. Theupper electrode is conveniently arranged in the settlementchamber.
