4,4'- biphenol can be prepared by dealkylation of the hydrogenation product of a diphenoquinone of the formula:wherein R is a tertiary alkyl group of 4-8 carbon atoms. Additional inventive features includes hydrogenation of an alkylated diphenoquinone in the presence of a heterogeneous catalyst and an alkyl benzene solvent and the dealkylation of a 3,3',5,5' diphenol by heating with an acid catalyst in an at least 4-fold molar excess of an alkyl benzene.
