Mechanically strengthened superconductors for strong magnetic fields, substantially containing Nb3 Sn or V3 Ga or Nb3 Al with or without additional alloys as the superconductive material, copper or a copper-tin or a copper-galium or a copper-beryllium alloy as the matrix material for the superconductive material and a material having a greater linear thermal coefficient of expansion alpha than that of the superconductive material as the first mechanical strengthening for the superconductive material embedded in the matrix material, characterized by the combination a) of superconductive material in the matrix matrial and b) of the first mechanical strengthening with c) an additional mechanical strengthening formed from a material having a smaller linear thermal coefficient of expansion alpha than that of the superconductive material, which additional mechanical strengthening at least partly compensates for the thermal contraction effect of the first strengthening on the superconductive material.
