METHOD OF SAFEGUARDING A LIQUID IN A TANK AGAINST THEFT, AND FIXING ELEMENT FOR THE EXECUTION OF THE METHOD

A method of protecting against the theft of a tank, for example the fuel tank of a vehicle, wherein an expansion element is permanently mounted in the filling pipe of the tank, the element being arranged to be blocked by a resilient force and to permit flow of liquid through the element. The method is characterized in that before the insertion of the expansion member, the latter is held in its folded position by means of a fastening element, whose strength characteristics are reduced by contact with the liquid. A fastening element (5) for carrying out the method is described. The fastener (5) can be designed to be used in combination with an expansion element in the form of a coiled spring (4), and may have a bar shape with a transverse hole at each end. When used in the filling pipe of a fuel tank, the fastening element (5) can be made of polystyrene. The above-described process makes assembly of the type indicated theft protection considerably simpler than with previous methods.
