Trans-4aR-5-n-propyl-4,4a,5,6,7,8,8a,9-octahydro-1H-pyrazolo [3,4- g!quinone (Ia) (or its totonerized form [Ib!) is prepd. for use as a hypotensive drug. Trans-dl-5-n-propyl-4,4a,5,6,7,8,8a,9octahydro- 1H(and 2H) pyrazolo[3,4-g! quinoline is reacted with tartaric acid to give trans-4aR tartaric acid salt, which is reacted with base to give the base form of compd. (I). This is separated from the reaction mixt. and then is made into proper salt form.
