Urarnyl nitrate, VO2(NO3)2, XH2O ( X is 2-6) is thermally denitrated in the solid state by heating to a temp. of at least 260 deg. C in a treatment chamber contg. a stream partial pressure of max. 65 mmHg, the temp. of the product at each instant during heating being less than the melting temp. corresponding to the instantaneous compsn. The product is high reactivity, pure VO3 powder having a BET specific surface of at least 15 sg. m/g. an apparent density of less than 1.5 g/cc, a pore volume of 0.15-1 cc/g, and a bimdoal pore volume distribution, i.e. of 8-40 nm, radius and 500-5000 nm. radius.
