APPARATUS FOR EXPANDING ZINCOR ZINCALLOY STRIP

Expanded mesh, partic. of lead or lead alloy, for battery grids is formed by concurrently slitting and preforming a strip within imperforate borders (30) to give slit segments deformed out of the strip plane and unslit segment remaining in the plane. Slit segments are severed from laterally adjacent segments and the borders and are convey from the plane. Laterally adjacent slit segments extend from opposite sides of the strip. The strip is slit at alternate bands formed by the unslit segments to extend the slit segments in staggered relation and define the nodes between them. The strip is expanded so that the nodes remain in the plane by drawing the longitudinal edges apart.
