PT--78926 A 1-Ethyl 6-fluoro 1,4-dihydro 7-(1-piperazinyl) 4-oxo quinoline 3-carboxylic acid, of formula (I) is made by a process comprising two phases of reaction with the piperazine and a final phase in presence of an alkali metal hydroxide. The process requires lower quantities of piperazine and gives a pure product in increased yield compared with conventional processes.
