Test medium for detecting P segregates in a metallic material comprises a 0.1-80wt.% AgNO3 soln., opt. contg. an alcohol, pref. a lower alkanol. The material is pref. in the form of a sheet impregnated with the soln. and pref. dried; the sheet is pref. paper. The impregnated sheet is held in contact with the steel sample surface. The sheet is then pref. fixed in thiosulphate. The steel surface is pref. initially etched, using a soln. of an acid(salt) and an alcohol, pref. a lower alkanol.
