The title cpds. are prepd. by fractional crystallization of D,L- carnitine dibenzoyl-D(-) tartrate in methanolic soln. at below - 10deg.C. Reacting D,L-carnitine hydrochloride with Na-alkoxide in MeOH, filter off NaCl, reacting with dibenzoyl-D-tartaric acid of eq. mol. amts., supercooling rxn. mixt. at below -10deg.C, recrystallizing pptn. in MeOH to give title cpds. (yield=70-80%, specific rotation [alpha D20= -95 to -96 deg.C.)
