Special steel alloy for manufacturing hardened and annealed special steel

0.20-0.45 C, 0.08-0.50 Si, 0.30-1.50 Mn, up to 0.020 P, up to 0.02-0.150 Ti and/or Al and 0.005-0.03 Nb, is formed by austenising at 860-960 deg.C, quenching with water, oil or compressed air, and tempering at 160-350 deg.C, to produce a brinell hardness of 450-550 HB. Presence of Nb enhances precipitation hardness and minimises welding hardness slag.
