Cr steels are given improved resistance to oxidation at 400 degrees C-900 degrees C by enclosing the alloy together with a volatile inorganic B cpd. which is heated to form a vapour which contacts the surface(s) of the alloy. The B cpd. is pref. a B silicate glass, Na metaborate, Na tetraborate, boric acid or B trioxide. Blank, as well as already oxidised, surfaces of Cr steel can be treated, and the process is also suitable for large, complex structures which can be provided with an oxidation resistant coating either during fabrication or after oxidation has occurred during service.
