The one-way electric switch is designed to avoid high power loss when switched on and to withstand greater reverse voltages when switched off. An inductor is connected into every path of the circuit that carries current when the switch is switched on. This inductor limits the linear or current-dependent rate of increase of the current through the switch when switched on. Once the switch has reached a steady state, practically no current flows through this inductor. A diode/capacitor circuit is connected in parallel with the switch's main current path. The polarity of the diode is chosen to prevent current flowing in the reverse direction.
