Sections separated by transverse expansion joints are prestressed when concrete has set, in making up roads, airfield runways or similar from prestressed concrete slabs. In each case, two or more successive sections are made with an intervening space to permit application of stressing presses, and their longitudinal stress slabs are tensioned. Prestressing force is then relaxed, and section's stress members are joined together. Spaces are filled with concrete, and stress slabs are again tensioned, from section's outer ends. Longer sections can be used, and less cross joints are involved.
