To reduce the sulphur dioxide emissions when lignite dust and lignite briquettes are burned, these are provided during the manufacture with a defined proportion of sulphur-binding substances, preferably CaO and/or MgO or compounds which release CaO and/or MgO at elevated temperatures, in such a way that, for use in small burning installations, sulphur-binding substances are added to the lignite and, if appropriate, the resulting mixture is ground or briquetted. The operator of such furnaces thus does not need to take any special measures for reducing the sulphur dioxide emission. In particular, it is not necessary to provide the furnace with additional devices for feeding sulphur-binding substances into the combustion chamber.
