In the case of a rear axle drive an input shaft is connected by an infinitely variable speed transmission to an intermediate shaft having a drive bevel gear pinion. The drive bevel gear pinion meshes with a ring gear of a differential gear, which is connected to two universal joints lying symmetrically in relation to a vertical reference plane. The transmission housing is divided by a partition wall running transversely to the vertical reference plane into two transmission chambers, one of which accommodates the differential gear and the other the variable speed transmission with input shaft and intermediate shaft lying parallel to the vertical reference plane in each case. For a compact design of the rear axle drive the partition wall is arranged in front of a transmission main axis perpendicular to the reference plane and the differential gear in the rear transmission chamber. The front transmission chamber accommodates the variable speed transmission with input shaft and intermediate shaft. The axis of rotation of the input shaft lies in the vertical reference plane. The axis of rotation of the intermediate shaft is closer to a joint plane, which contains the joint centre lying on the same side of the reference plane and lies parallel to the reference plane, than to the reference plane.
