Apparatus for investigating the shear strength of soil samples

In an apparatus for determining the shear strength of soil samples, for example loose stone, in a direct shear test. The test specimen consisting of loose stone or the like and introduced into a parted mould of the apparatus is sheared by displacing the mould halves relative to one another. Both mould halves are mounted in a contact-free manner with the formation of an air gap in the parting plane. The mounting is of low-friction type. The air gap is approximately 0.05 mm. The guides for the mould halves are outside the mould parts which receive the sample. One of the guides can be detached so that one of the mould halves can be swivelled around the other mould half, the fixed guide acting as a pivot. The upper mould half is sealed by a lid which guides a plunger in a low-friction manner.
