In order to increase the capacity and the accuracy in a method for the cutting-to-length of elongated metal material, the elongated material being positioned under a cut-off device and being cut through, it is proposed that the elongated material (1) be taken hold of before the first separating cut close to its ends near the separating point on both sides of the same and that it be held in place during the cut-off operation, that the separating point thus produced be used as a comparison measuring point for the following separating cuts, that the transport grips (12) release the elongated material (1) as soon as it is held in place close to the separating point and that the transport grips (12) then be returned into the initial position and take hold of the elongated material (1) there, and that, after this and after the elongated material (1) is cut through, the holding arrangement close to the separating point be released and that the elongated material (1) be advanced by the predeterminable travel so that the next separating point is arranged in the correct position under the cut-off device (3).
