Serving to control the external feed drives for coal ploughs activated with high-pressure water is a method in which the control of both drives is synchronised. Here, the first hauling drive is controlled according to a certain predetermined torque/speed characteristic by its speed being governed only by the slit depth of the high-pressure water jet or the chain hauling force. The torque of the second hauling drive is changed in accordance with the loading, preferably briefly adjusted to overload. Serving to carry out the method is a device in which the first hauling drive can be controlled as a function of the slit depth or chain hauling force, and the second hauling drive is designed in such a way that it can be overloaded in respect of the torque.
