In a 4-way fitting (3) for heat exchangers or similar applications, leak-tightness is an essential prerequisite. In addition, the fitting should be simple and inexpensive. This is achieved by offset pairs of connection branches (30,31; 32,33) and a swivellable or displaceable valve slide (23,57) having sealing elements (37,38, 59-61) which rest directly against the housing (21,56). The said sealing elements are arranged in such a way in relation to the connection branches (30,31,32,33) that, during the adjusting movement of the valve slide (23,57), the directions of the forward flow (9) and the return flow (10) in the housing (21,56) are reversed for the purpose of periodic cleaning in heat exchangers (5) by means of cleaning elements (7).
