A method for determining the nature of the surface of air-borne, submicron particles is described, which consists in combining an electrical mobility analyser and an automatic condensation nucleus container of pressure-stage type. A conclusion is reached about the nature of the particle surface from the difference between the electrical mobility diameter and the Kelvin equivalent diameter of a monodisperse aerosol fraction as determined using the nucleus counter.
