The invention relates to a transcription material for hand and machine copying sheets having a backing made of paper containing cellulose fibres, optionally having one or more non-copyable intermediate and back layers which can be coloured or provided with colour-contrasting back prints, a copyable wax-bonded colour layer containing copyable pigments and optionally with an also non-copyable, non-coloured back wax layer, the transcription material containing a prepared paper based on pure cellulose and, as a finishing agent, a polyethylene glycol of an average molecular weight of 100 to 1500 or a polymeric polycarboxylic acid at least partially esterified with the hydroxyl groups of the pure cellulose. In addition, it is concerned with a process for the production of transcription materials of this type, the process starting in particular from the poly(methyl vinyl ether/maleic anhydride) as a precursor in the case of the polymeric polyacid. Consequently an inexpensive starting material, pure cellulose, can be used in these copying materials. As a result of the treatment with the finishing agents described, those properties are imparted to the copying material which per se only a copying material made from rag paper shows.
