The invention relates to a coating cell in a plant for the electrolytic surface coating of metal strip, especially for galvanising steel strip. The strip - connected to a DC circuit via contact rollers - continuously passes through the coating cell as a cathode. The coating cell has a passage gap into which inlet ducts open which, with respect to a strip passing through, are supplied above and below by an electrolyte under hydraulic pressure. The coating cell has a central housing frame in which, below the strip, an anode, which is insoluble in the electrolyte and is connected to the DC circuit, is detachably fastened to a lower anode cover, and above the strip an upper anode cover is detachably fastened. The invention is characterised in that at the upper anode cover a mock anode, preferably made of plastic, is detachably disposed, made of a material insoluble in the electrolyte. The invention further comprises a process for the bilateral coating of a metal strip making use of at least two coating cells. After passing, for the purpose of unilateral coating, through the first coating cell or a first group of coating cells, the strip is turned. It then passes, for the purpose of coating the other side of the strip, through the second coating cell or a second group of coating cells. IMAGE
