In order to be able to utilise also the muscular power of the rear side of the human legs intensively in order to perform work, e.g. when cycling, the pedals are provided with devices known as "heel hooks", against which the heels can press and as a result of which a completely increased performance of work can be accomplished. This is achieved in that not only the musculature of the front side but also that of the rear side of the human leg is used for providing drive. Therefore, by using "heel hooks" an increased training effect is obtained when riding bikes. The heel hooks form elements of the pedals which are subjected to tensile stressing by the heel forces. The said hooks are designed in such a way that the foot can be raised from the pedal immediately at any time and the legs of the cyclist are free so as to be able to stop without risk of accident and get off in public road traffic, which has not been the case when using the devices characterising the prior art. In addition, heel hooks permit particular straining which complements cycling training and permits elements of the skeletal musculature which are required for cycling exercises to be developed and increase the training effect for the circulation.
