Thermal blocks, designed to maintain a stored material within predetermined limits of temp. comprises sealable container contg. D2O (I), undecylic cyanide (II), 4-bromodecanoic acid (III) or 2-bromodecanoic acid (IV). Specifically a thermally insulating container is provided having an interior cavity in which a container of the material to be stored is held in thermally conductive contact with the thermal block. The blocks are useful for maintaining the temp. of stored materials within a narrow range over a long period, irrespective of whether this is above or below ambient temp. The blocks are esp. useful for maintaining the temp. of whole blood or blood constituents at 1-6 degrees C during transport and storage.
