The metal-on-metal complete prosthetic hip replacement is made from a high density aluminium alloy. The femoral head radius is less than that of the acetabulam by 5 to 6 microns, and the circumference of the head in a north -south direction does not differ from that in an east-west direction by more than 1 micron. The surfaces of the femoral head and the acetabulum are polished to a roughness of no more than 0.15 microns Ra. The femoral section has a shaft for implantation into the femur and the acetabulum can be secured by an organic cement or osseous invasion.
