Magnetic tapes are recorded and reproduced on a machine on which press buttons allow the tape to advance or rewind normally or at high speed. The head is switched depending on direction of travel of the tape and high speed is selected automatically when silences are detected. A magnetic head (19) is equipped with a changeover switch (16) mounted on a moving plate (22). A lever (14) mounted on a second moving plate (26) is connected to the switch and to the direction changing mechanism. This comprises a control solenoid (3) which acts on a lever (5) to which an arm (8) is attached by a pivot point (7). This acts on toothed wheels (10, 12) to cause the lever (14) to slide a bar (15) on the changeover switch when either the rapid advance (1) or rewind (2) buttons are pressed.
