A method of preparation of a tertiary amine is to make react an aldehyde, 1996, and a compound containing nitrogen having the formula: & br / (see appended drawing in bopi) & & br / or r are independently chosen from the group consisting of 1996, alkyl, aryl, cycloalkyl, alkaryl and aralkyl, in the presence of a catalyst containing rhodium or ruthenium, in the reaction conditions, notably comprising a temperature between about 50 and approximately 350c and a pressure of between about 10 and about 300 atmospheres, and a recover the tertiary amine resultant.
