The ileostomy plug (1,2,3) is fixed to a supply, deep skirt (12) which fits into the intestinal opening. The plug is connected via a cardan joint (11) to a hollow shaft (4) at the bottom end of which is an active-carbon filled plug (10). A key (13) engages the upper plug and permits it to be rotated to deform the body of the device. The hollow shaft passes through a fixed upper cylinder (5) which engages a lower cylinder (6) via three longitudinal rods (8). A mobile washer (7) is threaded onto the rods and flexible tongues (9) extend between the washer and the lower cylinder. The elements mounted about the hollow shaft (4-9) deform the flexible skirt of the device to fix it inplace in the opening.
