Using decay heat from nuclear waste for space heating - by causing air to flow naturally over heat exchanger contg. waste and diverting required hot air to heating system
Irradiated material is placed in a storage envelope with a heat exchange arrangement over which air flows. Heat is extracted from the material, and its temp. is kept below a preset maximum level. Heated air can flow to the atmosphere. At least some of the heated air can be selectively diverted for use in heating. Decay heat from vitrified nuclear waste is employed for space heating of living and office accommodation or industrial premises. Excess heat is safely discharged to the atmosphere, preferably by natural thermosyphon.
