The trainer includes a frame with two rollers (R1) supporting the back wheel of the bicycle. Inside one of the rollers is an electrically controlled motor brake, and an opto-electronic device for measuring the speed of rotation of the roller in order to determine the comparable real speed of the cyclist. The front wheel of the bicycle is driven by a belt driven roller attached to the back roller. The unit is linked to a programmable calculator (5,6) with a keyboard for control and a tv type display. The unit which uses a microprocessor is able to simulate a route over various slopes, varying the load according to the slope, and monitoring the effort force applied to the pedals. Data entered into the processor include the combined weight of the cyclist and bicycle, and the derived operating mode.
