The hydraulic device amplifies or reduces the force applied to one of its liquid columns. It comprises two interconnected liquid columns. The two liquids have very different densities, e.g. oil and mercury. This device can be part of an apparatus for measuring gradients, inclinations, accelerations and levels. Such an apparatus can be used by a non-specialist. It can be intended to give a direct measurement or to be part of a servomechanism. In one example, the device is used in an inclinometer. At one end, bellows are connected to a tube filled with a light liquid. At the measurement end, the tube is connected to a chamber separated by a membrane from the volume of heavy liquid connected to the measuring tube.
