Process for operating a calcination plant which consists of a rotary tubular exchanger, an apparatus for calcination in suspension and a preheater through which the processing gases pass in series, in the order shown, and a distributor which makes it possible to send the materials exiting from the preheater either towards the rotary tubular exchanger or towards the calcination apparatus. In order to allow the production, in this plant, of various grades of alumina, the rotary tubular exchanger 10 is used either as a calcination oven, the outlet for materials from the preheater 22, 24, 36 then being directly connected to the inlet of the said exchanger and the calcination apparatus 16, 20, 32 being out of service, or as cooler, the calcination apparatus then being in service and the outlet for the materials from the preheater then being connected to the inlet of the calcination apparatus.
