PURPOSE:To perform continuous analysis of gaseous total mercury, by heating a gas including mercury as required, reducing compound mercury into metal mercury by a reducing catalyst, and guiding the cooled dry gas at a normal temperature to an atomic absorption analysis apparatus. CONSTITUTION:Dust and the like in a gas including mercury are removed by passing the gas through a quartz glass wool filter 1. The gas is heated by a heating furnace 2 provided with a temperature adjuster 15 as required. Then the gas is guided to a reducing-catalyst filled reacting device 3, whose temperature is controlled at a specified temperature by a temperature adjuster 12. Compound mercury in the gas is reduced into metal mercury. The gas is cooled by an air cooler 4 and an ice cooler 5. Thus the dry gas at a normal temperature is obtained. The condensed material is separated by a gas and liquid separator 6 and discarded by a pump 13. The gas is sucked by a sucking pump 7. The flow rate is adjusted by a needle valve 8. The gas is introduced into a frameless atomic absorption mercury analysis apparatus 10 together with air by a base-line setting device 14 and a three-way valve 9. The analysis is performed continuously.
