PURPOSE:To enhance heat response characteristics in high-speed recording, by a method wherein a thermal color forming layer comprising a diazo compound, a coupler and a binder is provided on the face side of a base consisting of a polyester film having specified properties, and a magnetic recording layer is provided on the back side. CONSTITUTION:A coating liquid for forming a thermal color forming layer which liquid is obtained by dissolving or dispersing a diazo compound, a coupler, a heat-fusible substance and a binder in a solvent is applied to the face side of the polyester film base having a brightness of not lower than 75% and an opacity of not lower than 90% to provide the thermal color forming layer. Then, a coating liquid for forming a magnetic recording layer which liquid is obtained by dispersing a magnetic powder in a binder is applied to the back side of the film base to provide the magnetic recording layer, thereby obtaining the diazo thermal recording material. The color forming layer may be a single layer or a laminate layer of a diazo layer and a coupler layer. A protective layer of a nitrocellulose resin or the like may be provided on the magnetic recording layer.
