NEW MATERIAL:The compound of formula I (X is halogen). EXAMPLE:N-[2,2,2-trichloro-1-(2,2,2-trichloroethoxy)ethyl]salicylamide. USE:An agent for controlling crubroot of cruficerous plant. It exhibits excellent effect at a low dose, and no phytotoxicity to crops. PREPARATION:The compound of formula I can be prepared by reacting the compound of formula II (Hal is halogen) with the compound of formula CX3CH2 OH in an inert solvent other than water and alcohol (e.g. toluene), preferably in the presence of an acid acceptor (e.g. pyridine, alkali metal hydroxide, etc.) at 0-100 deg.C.
