PURPOSE:To adsorb and collect a minute amount of an uranium ion contained in sea water in excellent selectivity and collection efficiency, by using a crosslinked insolbulized maleic acid copolymer as an adsorbing material. CONSTITUTION:A substance obtained by further subjecting a hydrolyzed copolymer consisting of maleic anhydride and a vinyl monomer copolymerizable therewith such as methyl vinyl ether, ethyl vinyl ether or isobutylene to crosslinking insolbulization treatment is used as an uranium adsorbent. The crosslinking insolbulization may be carried out by adding a divinyl monomer such as divinyl benzene or divinyl ether as a crosslinking agent during preparation of the above described copolymer. Other than this method, a diamine such as ethylenediamine may be reacted with the maleic anhydride copolymer or amino alcohol or polyhydric alcohol is reacted the copolymer of maleicanhydride to prepare the crosslinked insolbulized copolymer. By this method, an uranium adsorbent having excellent selectivity and collection efficiency is obtained.
