PRODUCTION OF LIGHTWEIGHT, TOUGH AND STRONG CASTING SHELL CONSISTING OF FIBER

PURPOSE:To produce easily a lightweight, tough and strong shell which meets the purpose of use and has high productivity and economy by manufacturing the casting shell of org. or inorg. fibers added with a suitable binder. CONSTITUTION:The suitable binder contg. a thermosetting resin is added to org. or inorg. fibers and after such fibers are coated and spread on a pattern for a die, etc. to a uniform thickness, the coated fibers are dried and cured naturally or by heating to manufacture the casting shell. Such shell is contained in a molding flask and coarse sand is packed around the shell. Graphite grains, etc. are packed around the shell to prevent the shell deformation during pouring in the case of a reducing atmosphere. The shell is lightweight, strong and tough and has suitable air permeability to improve the casting surface and to permit easy shaking out after casting when shell is properly compounded. The ease of the shell is therefore extremely simple and the productivity and economy thereof are excellent. The formation of the shell by blowing the fibers to the pattern is also possible by using the short fibers.
